RUSSIAN FISHERIES INDUSTRY WAS IN A FAVORABLE ENVIRONMENT IN 2015. THE RESULT SHOWED POSITIVE DYNAMICS OF THE VOLUME OF FRESH FISH CATCH AND FISH PRODUCTION. THE PRODUCTION GROWTH RATE OF CANNED FISH YOY WAS POSITIVE ALMOST THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.
Russian companies showed mixed dynamics of canned fish production during 2015. In December 2015, the volume of canned fish production in kind increased by 4%.
According to research results of IndexBox company, the cumulative gain in production was 11% in 2015. The positive growth rate in the market is based on the effective policy on stimulation of this branch implemented by the federal government. Measures have been taken to increase the efficiency of fishing catch and research and development financing has been increased. The manufacture of food and other products made of aquatic bioresources with a high degree of processing was stimulated by subsidizing credits.

The production volume of canned fish by value repeats the production dynamics by volume with a more pronounced growth. For example, the production volume by value turned out to be by 49% higher YoY. According to a study conducted by IndexBox company’s specialists, the cost of canned fish production increased significantly due to the rise of raw materials (fish) price associated with its deficit caused by the food embargo.
The table below presents 10 factories producing canned fish, ranked by revenue in year 2014. The leader of this criterion is ZAO “BALTIYSKIY BEREG” from Leningrad Oblast, followed by AO “MERIDIAN” from Moscow and AO “RUSSKOE MORE” from Moscow Oblast.
The largest production volume among all federal districts accounted for Northwestern Federal District: 43% of the total volume in the 4th quarter of 2015 was produced there. The Far East Federal District ranks second with a share of 38%, Central Federal District ranks third with a share of 10%. Altogether, 91% of Russian production volume in the 4th quarter of 2015 accounted for those federal districts. The share of federal districts in manufacturing products varied throughout 2015 reflecting the regional characteristics of canned fish production and the geography of fishing catch.

The food embargo imposed in August 2014 against a number of Western countries made adjustments to the development of fisheries sector. A niche for Russian products was created in the domestic market. As a result, even in the case that sanctions are lifted, Russian enterprises will feel much more comfortable in the market.
The Ministry for Economic Development forecasts that the growth of production (catch) of aquatic bioresources will increase by 6.7% reaching the level of 2014. In 2018, the volume of fish production and its derivative products will increase by 9.2%. Further development of national fishing complexes is associated with an active saturation of the domestic market with Russian high quality fish products, particularly through the adoption of modern technologies.
